ADHD, Autism and AuDHD

Learn what ADHD, Autism and AuDHD mean for you, how they present differently in each person, and why understanding yourself matters. We break down the science in clear, compassionate language.

Understanding ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person regulates attention, activity levels, and impulses. It can be present in childhood but often continues into adulthood, sometimes remaining unrecognised for many years.

ADHD does not look the same in everyone. Some individuals experience noticeable hyperactivity and impulsivity, while others struggle primarily with focus, organisation, and mental restlessness. These difficulties can impact education, employment, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.

In adults, ADHD is frequently misunderstood or misattributed to stress, anxiety, or personality traits. Symptoms may overlap with mood disorders, emotional regulation difficulties, or addictive behaviours, making accurate diagnosis complex. A specialist-led assessment is essential to ensure clarity and appropriate recommendations.

Understanding Autism (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that influences how individuals communicate, interact, and experience the world around them. While traits are often present from early childhood, autism may be identified at any stage of life, including adulthood.

Autistic people may experience differences in social communication, sensory processing, routines, and interests. These traits exist across a wide spectrum, meaning no two autistic individuals are the same. Some may require ongoing support, while others live independently but experience the world in distinct ways.

Autism is not an illness to be cured, but a difference in neurodevelopment. With the right understanding, diagnosis, and support, autistic individuals can thrive. Unfortunately, access to accurate assessment and informed services remains limited, particularly for adults, contributing to underdiagnosis and misunderstanding.

Understanding AuDHD

AuDHD describes the co-occurrence of Autism and ADHD in the same individual. Rather than being a separate diagnosis, it reflects a complex neurodevelopmental profile where traits of both conditions interact and influence one another.

People with AuDHD may experience conflicting needs, such as craving structure while also seeking novelty, or struggling with attention alongside heightened sensory sensitivity. This combination can lead to exhaustion, burnout, or difficulties with emotional regulation, particularly when one condition masks the other.

Because ADHD and Autism can overlap in presentation, AuDHD is often missed or misinterpreted. A comprehensive, integrated assessment approach is required to understand the full picture and provide recommendations that support the individual as a whole, rather than addressing each condition in isolation.
